One of Australia's most in-demand healthcare careers. Enrolled nurses work alongside registered nurses in hospitals, aged care and community health β with a clear 18-month study pathway and immediate employment on graduation.
Registered nurses are Australia's single largest employed occupation outside retail, with more than 340,000 people working in the role in 2026. Enrolled nurses are equally in demand. The Australian Institute of Health and Welfare projects Australia will face a shortfall of 85,000 nurses by 2030. Every hospital, aged care facility, GP practice, community health centre and private clinic is actively recruiting nursing staff at all levels.
For career changers, enrolled nursing offers something rare: a clear, achievable, nationally recognised pathway into a profession with genuine job security, strong wages and work that matters. The Diploma of Nursing (HLT54121) takes 18 months full-time or up to three years part-time, is available at every TAFE in Australia, and leads directly to registration with AHPRA β Australia's national health practitioner registration body.
Enrolled nurses (ENs) work under the supervision of registered nurses and provide direct clinical care. Day-to-day responsibilities include: administering medications, performing wound dressings, monitoring vital signs, providing personal care, supporting patients with mobility and daily activities, documenting patient observations, and communicating patient changes to the supervising RN. ENs work across all healthcare settings β public and private hospitals, aged care, community health, GP practices and mental health.
Enrolled Nurse graduate starting rate: $62,000β$70,000 AUD (public hospital award). With penalty rates: effective annual income of $75,000β$90,000. Senior EN (3β5 years): $80,000β$95,000. Enrolled nurses who complete a bridging program to become Registered Nurses earn $85,000β$120,000+. Agency rates for experienced ENs: $45β$65 per hour. Rural and remote Australia: significantly higher rates and incentive payments through rural health programs.
Public hospitals: every state and territory health network β NSW Health, Queensland Health, Alfred Health, Austin Health, SA Health. Private hospitals: Ramsay Health Care, Healthscope, St John of God. Aged care: Bupa, Regis, HammondCare, Bolton Clarke, Mercy Care. Community health: Primary Health Networks, GP superclinics. Remote and rural: QLD Remote Area Health Corps, NT Health, WA Country Health Service β all offering significant incentive packages.
Personal care and aged care workers: The most natural transition β clinical environment familiarity and patient care experience. Many enrolled nursing programs recognise prior learning from Certificate III in Individual Support. Healthcare administrators: Medical terminology and clinical environment knowledge. Allied health assistants: Hands-on patient care experience. Teachers and childcare workers: Communication, patience and working with vulnerable people. Anyone who has cared for a family member: Empathy, observation and resilience are foundational nursing qualities.

The Diploma is government-subsidised at TAFE in most states.

Can I study online? Theory components are flexible at many TAFEs, but clinical placements are mandatory face-to-face. Fully online enrolled nursing is not possible due to AHPRA registration requirements for supervised clinical hours. Do I need prior healthcare experience? Not always β TAFE programs accept applicants from all backgrounds, though prior care experience strengthens your application and improves clinical placement performance. What is the difference between an EN and an RN? Enrolled nurses work under RN supervision with a defined scope of practice. RNs work independently with broader clinical authority and higher salaries. EN is the faster, more accessible starting point β and a proven stepping stone to RN.
Mental Health First Aid demonstrates clinical awareness and genuine commitment to healthcare β it strengthens your TAFE application, is required by many healthcare employers and is applicable from day one of clinical placement. Complete this two-day course while preparing your TAFE application.
